Eco Friendly Window Cleaning Tips That Work

Because a streak-free shine shouldn't cost the Earth

Let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like a sunbeam shining through clean glass. But if you’re scrubbing your windows with a chemical cocktail that smells like a science lab? Not so great.

I’ve spent years cleaning windows all over Sydney—from beachside homes coated in salt spray to dusty shopfronts in the Inner West. And one thing’s clear (pun intended): you don’t need harsh chemicals to get a sparkling finish.

In fact, going eco-friendly with your window cleaning is better for your health, your home, your pets, and the planet too.

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way, including what works, what to avoid, and how to get those windows shining without wrecking the environment.

🧪 What’s the Problem with Traditional Window Cleaners?

Most off-the-shelf window sprays are packed with:

⚠️ Ammonia (harsh on lungs and skin)
⚠️ VOCs (volatile organic compounds that affect air quality)
⚠️ Synthetic dyes and fragrances
⚠️ Non-biodegradable agents

When you rinse these off your windows, they don’t just disappear—they end up in storm drains, rivers, and marine ecosystems. And if you’ve got kids, pets, or sensitive skin? You probably already know they’re not ideal to have around.

Bottom line: clean windows shouldn’t come with a chemical warning label.

What Is an Eco-Friendly Window Cleaner?

Here’s what you want in a planet-friendly glass cleaner:
🌱 Biodegradable (breaks down without polluting)
🌱 Non-toxic (safe to touch, inhale, and rinse)
🌱 Plant-based or naturally derived
🌱 Free from ammonia, bleach, and synthetic nasties
🌱 Packaged responsibly (think reusable or recyclable)

At Pure Gutters, we use a combination of eco-friendly professional solutions and old-school natural ingredients. They work just as well as commercial products—without the lingering chemical smell or environmental guilt.

🌿 DIY Eco-Friendly Window Cleaning Recipes

Want to go green between professional cleans? Here are a few of my favourite homemade solutions. They’re cheap, safe, and surprisingly effective:

🧴 Classic Vinegar Spray

🔸 1 part white vinegar
🔸 2 parts warm water
🔸 (Optional: add a few drops of lemon juice or eucalyptus oil)

Why it works:
Vinegar cuts through grime, breaks down water spots, and leaves glass streak-free.

Best for: General use indoors and out.

🧼 Castile Soap Mix

🔸 1 teaspoon liquid castile soap
🔸 1 litre of warm water

Why it works:
Soap lifts greasy fingerprints and sticky spots—great for kitchens or BBQ areas.

Best for: Window near cooking or where sticky hands linger.

✨ Cornstarch Polish

🔸 1 tablespoon cornstarch
🔸 1 cup vinegar
🔸 1 cup warm water

Why it works:
Cornstarch creates a gentle abrasive texture for extra shine without scratches.

Best for: Glass that’s gone dull or streaky.

Pure Gutters’ Tip:

Always use a microfibre cloth or rubber squeegee. Skip the paper towels—they leave lint. Old newspaper also works (and yes, it’s biodegradable!).

If you’ve got a rainwater tank, here’s some good news: rainwater is soft and low in minerals, which makes it perfect for window cleaning. No streaks, no chalky residue.

♻ Our Eco Commitment at Pure Gutters

We walk the talk. Our team is constantly finding ways to improve our impact while still delivering top-notch results.

That includes:
✅ Using plant-safe, pet-friendly cleaning products
✅ Minimising water usage with low-flow tools
✅ Avoiding plastic where possible (and recycling when we must)
✅ Sharing knowledge with our customers (like you!) on low-tox home care

Sydney’s environment is unique. Whether you’re beachside, bush-adjacent, or in the middle of suburbia, the runoff from your gutters and windows ends up in our waterways. Every little bit of chemical waste we don’t release makes a difference.

Plus, our wild weather (sun, salt, storms, repeat) means your windows cop a lot. Going gentle helps extend the life of your glass, frames, and seals—so you’re not replacing them sooner than you need to.

👷‍♂ When to Call the Pros

Sure, DIY is great—but when it comes to tall windows, hard-to-reach spots, or full house cleans, it’s worth calling in someone who:

🧠 Knows how to clean without damage
🌱 Uses eco-certified products
🪜 Has ladder safety training and insurance
👷🏻‍♂ Can bundle in other services (like gutter and solar panel cleaning)

At Pure Gutters, we don’t just do windows—we offer whole-home exterior care, sustainably.

Want to be extra efficient with your eco-efforts? Combine your window clean with:

✅ Gutter cleaning (keeps water flowing away from your walls)
✅ Roof washing (removes mould without pressure damage)
✅ Solar panel bird proofing (keeps your system efficient and clean)

Fewer visits. Less water. More results.

If you’re tired of chemical cleaners and cloudy views, it’s time to go green with your glass.

Pure Gutters offers eco-friendly window cleaning services across Sydney, from beach homes to high-rises to commercial buildings.
